There is no specific inspiration for this story, other than the countless stories I have read over the years about police officers / detectives / super heroes investigating diabolical organizations and getting trapped by those organizations (This could include my own previous story "The Brotherhood of the Rose"). I did, however, get the inspiration for the hypnosis device being a pool from the great old movie "The Mummy" starring Boris Karloff.
